The cold war with Russia between the 1950s and 1980s has passed for many of us nearly unnoticed. Mainly in political and military circles it was a big issue and influenced the development of military weaponry substantially. This book describes what a formidable opponent Russia was. It gives the reader an overview of the armory that Russia could use in case of a military conflict.

Hidden in a good looking laminated soft cover and with 144 pages full of black and white and colored photos we receive much information on all the different types of Russian airplanes that were available to flatten the Western countries. The numbers are baffling and cannot be compared with the present amount of warplanes in use with the modern air forces. Luckily enough for the plane lover, the descriptions of the planes in use with the Russians is covering a big part of the book because a lot of other Soviet weaponry is shown also.

An important chapter is dedicated to the use of Russian war material (mainly planes and ground to air missiles) in other international conflicts like the Korean and Vietnamese war with the States. Also in the big conflicts in the Middle-East during the 70s and 80s between Israel and the Arabic countries the Russians supplied enormous amounts of planes and missiles to the  enemies of Israel.

Besides the air force, also the Russian fleet and the artillery and rockets in use with the army get an important part in this book with descriptions of the types in use, amounts and applications. And of  course provided with many photos of the subjects in action. For everybody who is interested in other disciplines of the Soviet war machine besides the air force, this is an interesting photobook  with much technical and tactical information backed up with a lot of nice photo shots.
