Review Albatros D.III/D.V: Aces’ Fighter (Famous Airplanes)

This book written in 2 languages namely English and Polish is solemny and ultimately dedicated to the Albatros WW 1 fighter plane. An A4 size laminated soft cover book with a high quality paper that gives the reader a very good description of the history, development, design and use in combat of the Albatros.

The first 31 pages gives the reader a view of the development stages from prototype until the last model the D.XI with production numbers and descriptions brightened with many original black and white photos of this plane during its operational period in the war. Construction drawings are also published.

The D. III and the D.V were the most succesful models used in the first WW over the Western and the Balkan frontier by the Germans. As the Polish Air Force also flew with the Albatros the Polish translation is obvious.

The good quality of the German build plane gave Germany a huge advantage in the early stages of the air war and resulted in increased losses fort he Allied Air Forces. Famous names flew this plane like von Richthoven, Udet, Goering, Voss and Buddecke. In the last year of the war there were 928 Albatros D.V fighters operational at the front nearly 50% of all fighters.

The other half of this book, 61 pages, are dedicated to the model builders.
In beautiful coloured photos the building of a 1/32 scale model of the D.V and the D.Va is described in very much detail . Motor and cockpit and even the bracing wires are shown in close up to enable you to build an award winning model.

As usual the last 11 pages are containing drawings of the markings and colour schemes of the different squadrons that flew with this famous fighter. For the reader that loves to read about all the details of the history of the Albatros and for the model builder that wants to show off with his capabilities of model building it is a gain for your bookshelf.
