A review on the book ‘Standed’! There we go. Timlin’s goal was to write an adventure book for kids with a strong focus on aviation. It is the story about two friends with rather opposed personalities and interests, who get themselves and a bunch of fellow kids and some grown ups involved in a aircaft accident which leaves them stranded. One of the friends is a cockpit simulator adept which consumes about all his playing time and happily for his fellow castaways is also able to keep a cool head.

After all it’s a book for kids so at the end they must not be bereaved of their night rest! The plot is an easy to read adventure story with, for a reader with an aviation background, an in depth handling of the aircraft involved, in both the operational and technical sense.

It gave me reminiscences of my practical RT (radio telephone) license exam! For aviators with a healthy suspiction of nonflying technicians there is an early give away of the plot when the ground mechanic walks around with a smart phone in one hand and a wrench in the other….recipe for disaster!

Not the adventure story itself but the, in my perception, overdosis of aircraft and aviation technicalities made me wonder at what age group this kids book is aimed for. When I gave it in the hands of an eight year young grandchild very soon he commented “but grandpa, no pictures ?” and then his interest faded away.

It’s now in the hands of a fourteen-year-old kid…wait & see what that brings. In short, an entertaining story with a strong focus on the technicalities of aviation. Maybe illustrating it would make it somewhat more accesible for the younger readers.
